DeLunas Open Water Swim Sees Surge in Race Registrations

The calm, clear waters of Santa Rosa Sound attract swimmers from a dozen states.

March 30, 2021 – Pensacola Beach, Florida – The second stop on the Speedo SALT Series, the 3rd Annual DeLuna’s Open Water Swim, takes place Saturday, April 24, 2021, in the protected waters of Santa Rosa Sound in Pensacola Beach, Florida. This year’s race is quickly becoming one of the Series’ more popular events with swimmers from a dozen states already registered and more expected to join by race day. There will be three different race distances that swimmers will be competing in: .6, 1.2, or 2.4 miles.

The race, named after Don Tristan de Luna, a 16th century Spanish conquistador who led an expedition to the Pensacola area in 1559, is managed and organized by Pensacola Sports. “The calm, protected waters of Santa Rosa Sound makes this race a great experience for competitive swimmers at all skill levels”, said Pensacola Sports President, Ray Palmer. He added, “we’re getting a lot of interest in the race and are attracting swimmers from as far away as Iowa, Texas and Illinois.”

Participant check-in will take place on Friday, April 23, at the Pensacola Beach Pavilion (Gulf side) from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There, swimmers will receive goodie bags, event shirts, and additional event information. Complimentary food and beverage will be offered to all swimmers. During the pre-race check-in, event staff will review the race rules and answer any questions for all event activities. Attendance Friday evening is not mandatory.

At the pre-race check-in, registrants and guests can also watch the opening round of the Pensacola Beach Firefighters Challenge that will be taking place adjacent to the pavilion.

On Saturday, April 24, Flounder’s Chowder House serves as the host location for the race site with swimmers starting and ending from Flounder’s white sandy beach. Flounder’s is word-famous for its beautiful setting, delicious seafood and fun atmosphere. The long pier and wide sandy beach provide a great vantage point for viewing the race. Stick around for the post-race food and awards presentation.
